Joseph Stalin and the USSR were hot on science. They actually did extremely well in several fields of science, and the superiority of Soviet science led to the Sputnik crisis in 1954.

But the Soviet adoration for science was not all harmless. The Soviet government saw religion as a threat to science, and openly ridiculed Christian belief and incarcerated and murdered tens of millions.

Fast forward to present day.

Richard Dawkins and the new atheists are again attempting to use the government as a tool to persecute Christians.
